With crude prices hitting record levels in recent times, developments have once again underscored the need to tap into the renewable energy sources. Energy issues are in sharp focus. Constraints in supply are making the goal of energy security highly elusive. When global warming is added to this mix the result is a silent chaos that many would want to hush up.

India is the only country in the entire world to have a separate ministry for renewable energy source. India is one of the few countries to have recognized the power of renewable energy sources. In fact, in India, the potential of renewable energy sources was first recognized as early as the 1970s. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy Sources came into existence in 1992.

The recent recognition of Indian scientist Rajendra Pachauri and his team's efforts pertaining to diffusing global warming threats comes as no surprise to industry watchers. Pachauri and his team at Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2007, an honor shared with none other than Al Gore for his campaigns against global warming. As India inches its way forward to becoming the third largest economy after China and the US by 2025, individuals and companies have much to look forward to India in renewable energy sector.
